Starbucks' Journey Creating a Master Data Management Competency

Looking for inspiration for your organization's MDM project?  Join us as DAMA-PS Corporate Member Starbucks Coffee Company shares their efforts to create a master data management program.

Many organizations are starting to think about the importance of master data, and yet many are struggling to actually create a comprehensive master data management (MDM) strategy, and build a MDM competency.  While people who work with data everyday understand the need, gaining the business engagement and buy-in is often an uphill battle.  Starbucks Coffee Company was no different, until five years ago when a global ERP implementation helped launch the idea.  The Master Data Integrity Organization (MDIO) was formed, to coordinate information across the vast organization.  While some organizations have focused on the more technical and governance aspects of master data management, Starbucks has taken a more comprehensive approach, including end to end process re-engineering, data quality audits, becoming embedded in key business activities, and ensuring strong data stewardship, especially at the executive level.

During this presentation you will learn about how Starbucks built the business case to create MDIO, the scope and structure of their team, the evolution of the MDIO role across the organization, their governance and data stewardship approach, the ways in which they are proving our value to the company, and where they’re headed in the future.

This is a great opportunity to celebrate the data success of a local member organization!  Please join us!

Amy Cihak is the director of master data integrity at Starbucks Coffee Company.  She was a key resource in the creation of the master data team at Starbucks, and as well as creating shared service centers across the globe.  Prior to Starbucks, Amy has over 18 years of experience in application management, process re-engineering, and project management in the health care industry.
