The Evolution of Data Management – A Dialogue With DAMA Members

Over the past few years, we have seen a profound shift in the way that data management work is prioritized, allocated, staffed, and viewed by management.  Data management tasks have been outsourced, down-tiered, and eliminated (along with many of our jobs).  Other work is being supplanted by new technology, and changes in application development methodology.

Larry Burns will give a short presentation on these trends, analyze the reasons behind them, and suggest ways in which we as data professionals can respond to them.  The meeting will then be opened up to a general discussion of these issues.  Come prepared with ideas to share on how to keep data management, with its unique skill set, relevant in the coming decade!

Larry Burns has worked in IT for more than 25 years as a database administrator, application developer, consultant and teacher.  He holds a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Washington and a Masters degree in Software Engineering from Seattle University.  He currently works for Paccar ITD Data Services as a database consultant on numerous application development projects, and teaches a series of data management classes for application developers.  He was a contributor to DAMA International’s Data Management Body of Knowledge (DAMA-DMBOK), and is a former instructor and advisor in the certificate program for Data Resource Management at the University of Washington in Seattle.  You can contact him at Larry.Burns@paccar.com.
