Abstract:
The ‘business’ always hates data quality projects and for good reason. The business will endure budget and schedule overruns only to have projects fail to deliver promised business value. Data quality is a necessary evil because superior Product data is a high value digital differentiator and poor Product data quality is strategically prohibitive and very costly.
In late 2020, Scott’s Information Architecture Management (IAM) team identified over 30 separate Product data quality projects across Boeing Global Services (BGS) of similar and overlapping scope. Each team was struggling to deliver value for similar reasons, a lack of common data, data tools & data skills. IAM conducted an architectural spike and use case analysis identifying the key data quality mgmt. (DQM) process elements teams required for success. Teams lacked data architects and modelers to understand, define and manage logically enforceable data requirements. Teams lacked tools and data savvy developers able integrate, de-duplicate and automate quality rules for 30M Product. BGS Supply Chain Data Governance aligned the DQM process elements to standardized data management (DAMA-based) roles forming a reusable ‘data centric’ DQM business function. After a successful proof of concept and prototype, the BGS supply chain data integration and quality pipeline is delivering business value as a new reusable service for which demand is rapidly growing across Boeing.
