Enduring Paradigms for the Data Modeler

Gary Schuldt will explore several situational archetypes that have helped him again and again in his work as data modeler, systems analyst, facilitator and teacher.  These paradigms are not, for the most part, data model patterns; rather, each is like a special metaphor that can help the analyst respond to situations typically encountered when assembling a data model.  Gary will walk through each paradigm, comment on its origin, and, most importantly, describe the modeling situations in which it has proven useful. 

It is hoped that each one in the audience will recognize many of those situations and will see the value of applying the appropriate paradigms.

Gary Schuldt, Principal Consultant for Syncretics Inc (Olympia, WA), has been earning his living in the IT industry since 1966, when programming in FORTRAN first caught his fancy. Over 40 years later, he still likes to program (for fun!), now creating MS Access applications using VBA.  In the meantime, he has worked as a systems programmer, software designer, systems analyst, data architect, project lead, facilitator, methodologist, consultant, and instructor.  Gary co-founded Syncretics in 1983 and developed a full curriculum of data management courses, which he has presented extensively in Australia, the EU, North America and SE Asia.  He has received the DAMA International Individual Achievement Award for his methodological and educational contributions to the field of Information Modeling.
